Stroke
This is a short but great animated video explaining stroke. The location of the stroke determines the type of impairments experienced. Speech Language Pathologists treat speech, language, voice, cognitive, and swallowing impairments after a stroke.
Concussion/Post Concussion Syndrome
Concussion is defined as a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells. Post Concussion Syndrome is the persistence of concussion symptoms beyond the normal course of recovery.
Speech Language Pathologists serve as part of the multidisciplinary team responsible for treating this population. SLPs focus on treatment and education to address the cognitive impairments associated with this diagnosis. Cognitive impairments may include poor focus/attention, slowed processing speed and reaction time and memory impairments
